Finding the potential wrapped up in your calling will take seeing your life as a spiritual counterpart to a traditional country doctor. A country doctor does his duties of delivering babies, seeing children through their growing up years, giving them preventative shots, curing their fevers, listening to their dreams, helping them through puberty and pimples, teaching them the facts of life, attending their weddings, and delivering their children. Successions of such doctors carry out this cycle for each new generation.

However, the country doctor is often frustrated by his failures, underpaid by his patients, poorly equipped by technology, and is not especially viewed as an important professional by his peers in big city hospitals. But as he lives his life, he has the incredible joy of knowing he saved Tim's life, brought Margie and her baby through a difficult labor, sat up all night as Granny changed worlds, and prescribed healing medicine to make Jack feel better in a few days.

Your calling has a similar impact on bringing God’s good to this Earth. Finding your passion may seem to be adolescent, illogical, or even utopian. To find that passion, that calling, requires giving thought to the basic purpose for your life, that mission God sent you on, the mission He has empowered you to carry out.

The questions you must ask your self are:

  • Who called you?

  • Who started you along your path?

  • In what ways are you distracted from your essential purpose?

  • What will it take to make your passion your most compelling motivation?

  • Has worldly culture strangled significance out of your service?

You must never forget that your calling is more than an honorable profession, a praiseworthy dedication, or even a commendable way of life. Rather it is a tender, life giving relationship between God and the one He has called, you. By carrying out your  calling, you can accomplish incredible achievement beyond your wildest dreams because of the personal relationship between God and the one whom He has called.
