Whilst we have many leaders in positions of influence and authority we have a challenge that there is little leadership and it is my humble submission that we need leaders that are secure, resolute, grounded, balanced and principled.

1. A good leader is secure in his own identity and he knows that he came from God and that's where his leadership originates from. He therefore knows how to submit and have others submit under his authority. The Lord Jesus is a fine example of such leadership.

2. A good leader knows that his authority does not necessarily derive from the position that he is appointed to, but the fact that he is guided by God into leadership. I would rather have God appoint me because people will appoint and disappoint.

3. A good leader does not impose his leadership style on people nor make life difficult for them by seeking to reap what he did not sow. Rather, he grooms, and nurtures the ones who follow in order to bring out the best in them.

4. A good leader does not expect nor command his followers to do things that he is not prepared to do himself. Instead, he models how things ought to be done and leads by effective example.

5. A true leader guards you from error, guides you in the right direction and takes you to the places you ought to go, where you couldn't have gone by yourself.

6. Godly leaders have an apostolic, pioneering spirit and they boldly go where no one has gone before in order to take their followers to places thy were either too timid or intimidated to go.

7. A good leader has eyes in his head. He sees what others don't see, Therefore he is qualified to lead.

8. A good leader recognizes that formal authority is like a bar of soap, the more you use it, the more you lose it. Instead he creates good relationships with his followers, understands their needs and provides strong leadership influence.

9. A good leader takes responsibility and does not make excuses. He also recognizes that he must take care of the needs of his followers even if his are not met.

10. A good leader seeks the counsel of experienced mentors who have walked the path before him. He lets them guide him lest he lead people astray.

I hope I have been able to distinguish excellent leaders from mediocre leaders.
